Everything Must Change

Brian McLaren to visit St. Petersburg The Florida Conference’s Connectional Ministries office is sponsoring a stop on Brian McLaren’s Everything Must Change tour next month in St. Petersburg.

Included on the tour are events in 11 cities. The only stop in Florida is Feb. 29-March 1 at First Baptist Church in St. Petersburg.

McLaren says the church is experiencing a “deep shift” as leaders and members seek to discern how to be a Christian in today’s church and world. The tour and associated resources strive to answer such questions as:

  • What does it mean to be a follower of God in the way of Jesus in todays world?
  • What does it mean to be a faith community engaged in the holistic, integral mission of God in our world today?
  • How do we, as individuals and faith communities, respond faithfully to the crises facing our world?

The on-site tour experience will include opportunities to hear and respond to new material from McLaren; time for Q&A and dialogue; a book-signing and -release party for McLaren’s newest book, “Everything Must Change: Jesus, Global Crises, and a Revolution of Hope”, available at a special introductory price; and new music, liturgical experiences and other resources attendees can use in their faith communities, created with Tracy Howe ( www.restorationvillage.com).

A portion of the gathering’s proceeds will go toward helping a local peace/justice mission or charitable project chosen with the help of the host and a global project chosen with the co-sponsors.

Participants also have the opportunity for off-site dialogue and are encouraged to prepare for the tour by going online to FirstShift experience at deepshift.org Event details, registration information and costs are available at deepshift.org.

Sinclair Scholarship deadline nears

At this time every year, the Florida United Methodist Foundation accepts applications for the Sinclair Scholarship. Application deadline for the 2008 scholarship is March 25. The award is available exclusively to United Methodist youth who will be incoming college freshmen in the fall of 2008. To qualify, candidates must be planning to attend a Florida or United Methodist college or university. Applications are evaluated on the basis of academic achievement, church and community service and financial need. Youth leaders are especially encouraged to apply.
The Foundation publicizes the scholarship on its Web site and through an e-mail blast to pastors and youth directors at churches conference-wide. It relies on local churches to help identify deserving candidates, and a publicity poster that can be posted in youth departments and/or other locations where members gather is available for your use. A copy of the 2008 Sinclair Scholarship Poster may be downloaded at
